One of the most popular stories that surrounded ‘Anand’ was that it was based on Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s bond with Raj Kapoor. Rajesh Khanna’s character was said to be modelled on Kapoor’s, while Amitabh Bachchan played Mukherjee’s role. The film was based on an incident when Raj Kapoor was seriously ill and Hrishikesh Mukherjee had felt he would die. 185 A FOCUS ON THE FIRST SUPERSTAR OF INDIAN CINEMA RAJESH KHANNA
